Moving house

Moving house is often a fun and sometimes exciting step. And retirement is not the first thing that springs to mind. However, it can still have consequences, for example if you move abroad. Or vice versa. You can read more about it below.

Moving within or to the Netherlands

If you move to a Dutch address, you only have to inform the municipality where you will be living. They will automatically pass this on to your pension provider. Will you be living with your partner from that moment on? Then it is good to take a moment to think about your pension and to make agreements about it. For example, about your survivor's pension. You can read more about this on the page Marriage or cohabitation.

Moving abroad

Moving abroad

Moving abroad does not have to have any consequences for your accrued pension. However, it often affects the amount of your AOW pension. You are only entitled to an AOW pension if you work or live in the Netherlands. If you go abroad for a number of years, your AOW pension may be lower. Sometimes it is possible to get insured for the AOW pension for the years that you lived and/or worked abroad. This way you will still receive your full AOW pension.

Good to know: are you going to move abroad? Then please pass on your address details to the Register of Non-Inhabitants (RNI). Your pension provider will then automatically receive your new address abroad. More information about this can be found at the National Service for Identity Data.

AIO supplement

If you have not accrued a full AOW pension, in some cases you are entitled to a supplement to your AOW pension. This is called an AIO supplement. You can read more about this on the website of the SVB.
