What stays the same and what changes?

The rules for your pension are going to change. That's why most pensions are changing. Below you can see what will stay the same and what will change.

This remains the same

  1. You will receive AOW from the government from your AOW age. Even if the new rules are in place.

  2. Many people accrue a pension through their employer. This will remain the case.

  3. You will receive a pension for as long as you live.

  4. Have you passed away? Then your partner will often receive a pension, even if you die before you retire.Overlijd je? Dan krijgt je partner vaak een pensioen, ook als je overlijdt voordat je met pensioen bent.

  5. You also usually continue to accrue a pension if you become disabled.

  6. Representatives of employers and employees, such as a union or a works council, continue to agree on pension schemes together.

This changes

  1. Pension with agreements on contributions: most employees in the Netherlands have a pension scheme where agreements have been made on the amount of the pension benefit. Due to the current rules, the expectation on this cannot always be met by all administrators. The new pension includes agreements on how much money you and your employer deposit for your pension. This pension is called a premium scheme.

  2. Pension through your employer may increase more quickly: if the economy is doing well, the pension you have accrued through your employer can be increased more quickly due to the new rules. But this pension may also decrease if the economy is worse. So the pension can fluctuate more. It is expected that with the new rules, pensions will increase more often and sooner than is currently the case. On the website pensioenduidelijkheid.nl you will find more information about the economic developments in your pension.

  3. Clear and same rules for survivor's pension: are you entitled to a survivor's pension? If so, many rules will soon be the same for everyone. This will make it clearer what the survivor can count on.
